Musical Director

Lucas de Jong

At the tender age of 9 Lucas joined the Metropolitan Boys' Choir and he has been a keen singer and musician ever since. He was chosen as a soloist for the 1974 Australian Opera season of TOSCA which served to open his eyes to the excitement of the grand operatic stage. Soon after the choir changed their name to Southern Cross Boys Choir Lucas became their conductor until age 14.

In 1986 Lucas completed a Music Diploma at the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music and was already a member of the chorus of Victoria State Opera, performing in several operas each year. He completed a year at the Victorian College of the Arts Opera School before being accepted as a soloist to the Victoria State Opera Young Artist Program in 1990, also winning several singing competition prizes along the way.

Lucas and his wife Fiona decided to embark on an extended visit to the UK in 1992 and in 1993 Lucas was accepted into the National Opera Studio, London. This led to the beginning of a solo career with several prestigious international opera companies, an interest which Lucas still keeps very much alive, performing with opera companies in Australia.

Along the way Lucas has experienced coaching and conducting small choirs and choruses of small opera companies, most recently conducting a performance of THE MAGIC FLUTE for the Monash University Opera Ensemble.

Lucas is looking forward to a fruitful relationship with the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir, honing their skills and maintaining the remarkable inherent qualities to be found there.
